5 Ways to Use Your Blender That You (Probably) Haven’t Tried

Unless you’re a drink-a-smoothie-every-day kind of person, chances are your blender is tucked away on a high shelf, or shoved into the back of a dark cupboard. Everyone has that one appliance they just don’t find much use for. But we’ve got news for you: the blender is one of the most versatile tools to have in your kitchen — they can mix, chop, purée, and stir — and you are seriously underutilizing it. Try something new in the kitchen by making these delicious things in your blender.

1. Easy, Breezy Breakfasts — Eggs and Hollandaise

Fresh and nutritious smoothies are one of the most obvious things to make in a blender, but did you know they can be used to whisk eggs for omelettes and scrambles? You and your brunch guests will love how light and fluffy everything turns out. Or, if you prefer poached, use your blender to make hollandaise sauce to go along with eggs Benedict. To start, blend egg yolks, lemon juice, and seasoning (cayenne and mustard work great) until light in colour; once that’s done, turn the blender on low and slowly mix in melted butter until you reach a desired consistency.

2. A Low-carb Favorite — Cauliflower Rice

Turning cauliflower into rice sounds meticulous and time consuming. But we’re going to let you in on a little secret: your blender can do all the hard work for you. Drop the raw florets in, add enough water to cover, and pulse until it looks like rice, then just drain the water after with a mesh strainer. It’s that effortless. Use it as a raw base for stir fries and curries or quickly toss the cauliflower rice in sunflower oil (an alternative to butter) and cook on the stove in a stainless steel fry pan for a few minutes before serving. Your blender deserves an extra thank you for this one because it’s bound to make you look like a true top chef in front of dinner guests.

3. Raw Dinners — Soups and Sauces

Try using your blender to make a healthy raw dinner. Vegetarian soups and sauces can be whipped up in mere minutes. In addition to eliminating cook time and reducing the number of dishes used, raw soups and sauces are also chock full of nutrients and flavor. But if raw’s not your jam, you can always use the hot soup function on your blender; the high speed creates friction that will heat your soup as it combines.

4. Your New Addiction — Whipped Coconut Cream

There’s a new reason to sneak to the fridge for a midnight treat. This vegan whipped cream alternative is made with full-fat coconut cream — it’s decadent, delicious, and oh so easy to make in a blender. Leave your coconut cream in the fridge overnight so the top layer can harden, then scoop that into your blender carafe and mix on high. Feel free to add icing sugar, maple syrup, or other sweeteners and flavors, but if you love the taste of coconut as much as we do, you can also leave as is. One ingredient, one appliance, one absolutely addictive dessert.

5. All the Nut Stuff — Milk, Butter, and Flour

Nut-based ingredients are all the rage — so why not take your love for plant-based dairy and baking alternatives to the next level by making them at home with your blender.

Nut Flour

Almond, walnut, and hazelnut flours are a cinch to make. Put your favorite nuts into your blender and grind until you’ve achieved a flour-like consistency. 

Pro Tip: You can use this flour to make a gluten-free cake, which will taste even better when topped with a dollop of whipped coconut cream.

Nut Milk

Making nut milk takes a few more steps. First you need to rinse the nuts, then soak them in water (we find that a ratio of one part nuts to four parts water works really well), and then re-rinse them. Once that’s done, you simply need to mix them with water in the blender for a few minutes, strain the pulp, and voila!

Pro Tip: You can compost the leftover pulp or use it to make moist, delicious cookies.

Nut Butter

Making nut butters is a lot easier than you think. Roast your nut of choice in the oven or on the stovetop (a small fry pan is great for this) for a few minutes, and then blend them together until you reach the desired consistency — remember to add a pinch of salt! It’s hard to be patient knowing all the goodness that’s coming your way, but creamy homemade nut butters are worth the wait.

Pro Tip: You can try making butters with seeds, too — try sunflower or pumpkin!
